COLLECTION: MALDA SMADI

Malda Smadi (b. 1987, Syria) is based in Dubai, UAE. Her practice addresses gender constructs, social attachments and the vulnerability associated with emotional awareness. Through her exploration in various mediums such as painting, photography, and collage Smadi questions the roles of identity, memory, and emotion in the presence and absence of the physical body. Smadi studied Visual Communication at the American University in Dubai (BFA, 2008). She completed the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship (SEAF), in partnership with the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Abu Dhabi (2017), and was the recipient of the Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award, 1st place, Fine Arts category (2016).

The presented works by Malda Smadi address gender constructs, private space and the vulnerability associated with emotional awareness. Through her exploration in various mediums such as painting, photography, and collage Smadi addresses the roles of identity, memory, and emotion in the presence and absence of the physical body. Smadi has a practice that in its subtlety contains existential questioning and exploration of belief systems and perceptions of the body.
